Hi Folks, I went ahead and got a 504, based solely on the fact that it took a 5x4 negative. (always better to jump in with both feet and no knowledge ). I'm assuming it's an early model as there's no model number such as Dichromat 1V etc. It has 3 Dial adjustable filters and a lever to lift them and it's cream/brown. It came with a Rodenstock Rodagon 150, 5x4 carrier and Transtab. I've got a few specfic questions now rather than a vague request for advice So here goes. Does anyone know the filter setting for VC paper (Ilford) Grades 1-5? Our Products DE VERE 504DS Digital Enlarger. The DE VERE 504DS digital enlarger brings digital life to your darkroom. A short guide to and description of Devere enlargers. Do I need glass plates for the Negative carrier? Would a Viponel Analogue timer be ok? (I have the plug to suit the Transtab). Or what would you recommend? I was intending to order the manual, In your opinion, is it worth spending £25 on? Thanks in Advance, Richard. You'll find the required filter settings printed on the data sheet that comes with the printing paper. Up to you - a glazed carrier keeps the neg flat and enables you to focus accurately across the whole plane. An unglazed carrier means you have two fewer surfaces to keep dust-free when mounting the neg, and that there is no danger of Newton rings. But if the carrier you have is unglazed I don't think you have the option of puttting glass in - it will be made to work one way or the other, most likely. No idea - sorry. ![]() ![]() Generally speaking pretty much any enlarger timer should be usable if you fit the right plugs. Can't speak from knowledge of the De Vere (mine is an LPL), but really there's not much to know about using an enlarger, so I wouldn't bother myself, unless there's something that you really can't figure out. £25 is a lot to spend for information you could almost certainly get from other users on the web. Try for probably several bus-loads of people using 504s. Thanks Huw, I had another look on the Ilford site and found something I'd overlooked. It appears to indicate that the Kodak settings would be used with the DeVere (amongst others), unless I'm misinterpreting it. I think the Glass mounts fit in place of the glassless mounts, in any case if there's no asolute need I may as well try it without. WhiteBoard, free and safe download. De Vere EnlargerYes £25 does sound a bit steep, maybe there's more than the basics in it. I'll give APUG a try just to see if anyone actually bought it and if they thought it worth the money. Thanks Again, Richard Hi Nick, if I find anything I'll put it up. Hi, Here's some info that I gathered re DeVere 504 enlargers. Most of the information applies to the early type single lamp 504 Dichromat, (Cream/Brown, 3 vertical wheels to adjust filters) which is what mine is, but may also apply to the later type with knobs to adjust filtration (Black?/Cream)If you check the APUG forum you'll find some answers to questions that I asked. Negative Carriers, Either Glass or Glassless. Both come in 2 parts, top and bottom. De Vere Enlarger Manual Woodworkers GuideThey have a beveled edge which allows them to be clipped into the carrier. The metal (glassless) carriers are available in various sizes from 35mm Mounted Slide to 4x5. AFIK if you use the Glass type, one size does all, the glass plates are 4x5, one plain one anti-newton. Metal Masks seem rather expensive, £30+/- on ebay. Timers, Basically any timer will do if it can switch sufficent amps. Single 24v 250w lamp enlargers need a 6amp timer.
